This Week in the Trump – Russia Investigation. 9/2/17
New York Times: Special Counsel “Mueller Has Early Draft of Trump Letter
Giving Reasons for Firing Comey…Donald F McGahn II, the White House counsel,
who believed that its angry, meandering tone was problematic…blocked the
president from sending the letter…McGahn’s concerns…show how much he realized
that the president’s rationale for firing Mr. Comey might not hold up to
scrutiny” in an investigation over obstruction of justice.
The Week: “Muller teaming-up with IRS investigators
for Trump-Russia probe.” Trump has said that a demand from the Special Counsel
for his tax records would cause him to fire Muller.
Politico:
“Muller teams up with New York attorney general in Manafort probe…the
cooperation is the latest sign that the investigation … is intensifying” and “could potentially provide Mueller with
additional leverage to get Manafort to cooperate in the larger investigation
into Trump’s campaign.”
The Washington Post: “Trump declines to say Russia is
a Security Threat…in keeping with a general
reluctance to take a tough line against Russia, which U.S. intelligence
agencies say interfered in last year’s presidential election to try to benefit
Trump. The Justice Department and congressional committees are investigating
possible ties between Trump campaign associates and Russian government
officials.”
The Washington Post: “ President Donald
Trump’s personal lawyer acknowledged Monday that the president’s company
pursued a Trump Tower in Moscow during the Republican primary…The potential
deal shows that the Trump Organization was actively considering doing business
in Russia during the presidential election, providing special counsel Robert
Mueller’s investigators considerable fodder for turning their investigation
into Russian collusion toward Trump’s personal and business finances. Trump has
said Mueller would be crossing a red line by delving into his finances.”
The New York Times: A business associate of President
Trump promised in 2015 to engineer a real estate deal with the aid of…Putin,
that he said would help Mr Trump win the presidency…the associate, Felix Sater…predicted
that building a Trump Tower in Moscow would highlight Mr Trump’s savvy
negotiating skills and be a political boon to his candidacy.”
